How To Travel Without Leaving Home

Travel is a wonderful thing that can open up the doors of our minds to new and wonderful experiences. It can offer us a deeper understanding of different cultures, moments of awe at the beauty of the natural beauty the world has to offer, and an entire mental book of wonderful memories.

But it can also be highly expensive and time consuming, making it a more difficult thing to take part in for many of us with jobs, families, budgets, and demands.

But just because we aren’t able to jump on a plane and fly half way around the world doesn’t mean that we can’t get the benefits of traveling without leaving our home towns.

We have compiled a list of activities that will give you the taste of experience that travel offers without the commitment of time and money it so often demands.

01 | Try a new cuisine.

It’s easy to fall into the ruts of going to the same places over and over again, especially when it comes to eating. But one of the easiest but most rewarding ways to feel as if you’ve gone across the world is to try a new cuisine.

And don’t just order out — spend a night in an English Pub, or a French Brasserie, or Chinese Noodle House, a Turkish Kabob joint, or a Mexican Taqueria.

While it might seem simple, immersing yourself, even if just for a few hours, in a place with the decor of another country and the taste of another culture will widen your horizons.

02 | Take a walk through botanical gardens.

There are over one thousand botanical gardens or arboretums in the U.S., which means there is most likely a place within driving distance to you right now where you can spend hours walking through a myriad of beautiful plants from around the world.

Many of these gardens have places to sit and reflect where you can gaze at God’s amazing diversity of creativity while being surrounded by exotic and beautiful life.

03 | Go to a museum.

While going to museums is often discarded as a boring field trip, nothing could be further from the truth. Museums are a place where we can step into the history and story of different times, cultures, artistic movements, and traditions. Museums are filled with invitations to widen our minds and explore places we’ve never been before, right in our own locals.

Whether it’s an art museum where you can see artistic works from around the world, or a history exhibit that takes you on a journey through history, going to a museum can make you feel as if you’ve gone around the world (or back in time) in one afternoon.

04 | Walk through the zoo.

One of the best parts of traveling is getting to see the unique wildlife and habitats that exist in places around the world, the zoo is the place that brings all of them to you.

Spending a day gazing at the majesty of an African Lion, a Bengal Tiger, or a Chinese Water Dragon can give you a fuller picture of the amazing world of life around the world.

05 | Visit a culture center or fair.

Finally, one of the best and most immersive ways to experience another culture is to attend an event at a culture center or a traditional fair.

Surrounding yourself with the people of a different culture will allow you to not only be a spectator but an active participant in engaging with another culture.

It’s at these events that you can often learn the dances, hear the music, taste the food, and hear the language of cultures around the world.
