What Is Poetcore? (And How To Embrace It This Fall)
Little Women (2019). © Sony Pictures.
Several years ago, the dark academia trend took over the internet — and it was all about rainy libraries, candle lit rooms, gothic architecture, classical art, and antique furniture. It was gloomy and dramatic and mysterious.
Poetcore, the newest trend in the academic vein, might be thought of as dark academia’s softer cousin. It still has a literary lean, but it’s a bit cozier, and more relaxed. It’s all about rich browns, earthy greens, and warm reds; homey sweaters and leather bags; soft sunlight and poetry books on a park bench.
With that in mind, poetcore couldn’t be a better match for your autumn wardrobe. Below, find 10 items that will help you embrace it in the coming season.

01 | A cozy sweater.
No poetcore wardrobe would be complete without a few cozy sweaters to wear on rotation. The cozier, the better.
02 | Leather loafers.
Loafers offer the ease of the slip-on mules you’ve been wearing all summer, but add a touch of elegance.
03 | A linen button down.
For those warmer autumn days when the weather hasn’t quite turned, but you still want to live into your poetcore side.
04 | Pleated pants.
Poetcore is all about mixing structure with ease, and pleated pants offer both of those things beautifully.
05 | A messenger bag.
Where else will you keep the three books you’re reading, the collection of poetry you just started, and the novel you’ve been working on?
06 | An oversized cardigan.
A slouchy cardigan is as much an accessory as it is a piece of clothing — at least, when you’re embracing poetcore, it is.
07 | A billowy blouse.
Because any real poetcore-er simply must have a blouse with billowy sleeves that can rustle in the wind as you imagine yourself wandering across the moor.
08 | A corduroy skirt.
Nothing says autumn like the cozy, soft texture of corduroy.
09 | A pair of boots.
For those crisp, moody, or rain fall days when a little extra warmth will go a long way.
10 | Fun socks.
Poetcore is, after all, an academic-themed trend. And so, there must be argyle, striped, and other fun socks.
