If you are anything like me, you have gleefully been waiting for this slow change in weather since mid-July. There is frost on the ground in the morning, it’s time to try those soup recipes we have all been pinning on Pinterest for months, and perhaps most importantly, it’s time to revive our fall and winter wardrobes.

Fall fashion is a favorite of many (including myself) and while this is probably for many reasons, I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that we can finally have a little more fun with layering and textures. There is a certain joy to reaching for a staple piece you’ve had in your closet for years and putting it together in a way that feels brand new.

One of those timeless staples is a simple black turtleneck. If there is anything the All Too Well music video taught us (other than not to trust Dylan O’Brien) it’s that a fitted black turtleneck is as elegant as it can be simple. I certainly find myself reaching for mine often throughout the autumn and winter months.

Here are six ideas to incorporate your favorite black turtleneck into outfits this fall and winter. (Don’t worry, none of them will make you feel like Steve Jobs.)

01 | Under an oversized white button-up.

Today’s style seems to be all about elevating simple basics into an outfit that feels streamlined and elegant. This layered look, paired with your favorite denim and some gold jewelry, is the perfect casual look while still looking extremely put together and well thought out.

02 | Under a blazer.

The oversized blazer certainly has been having its moment in the fashion spotlight recently and I couldn’t be more pleased. Mixing an earth-toned blazer with a slim black turtleneck tucked into jeans is the perfect on-trend fall look. Pair it with a baseball hat to make it more relaxed or your favorite heels for a date night out.

Shop the look:

03 | With a sweater vest.

I couldn’t be more thrilled that sweater vests have made a comeback. They seem to have gone from a staple in our grandparents' closets to one of the more trendy fall pieces to wear out. An oversized or even cropped sweater vest paired with a black turtleneck is the perfect transitional look from fall to winter.

Shop the look:

04 | Tucked into patterned trousers.

While denim has certainly ruled the day in fashion for decades, I still like to include trousers and slacks in my everyday looks once and a while. A simple black turtleneck tucked into well-tailored trousers (I often prefer a pattern) is a classic style for a reason. I adore this sort of outfit with a pair of chunky loafers, but you also can’t go wrong with a simple pair of white sneakers.

Shop the look:

05 | Tucked into a maxi skirt.

The perils of attempting to dress up in cold weather are vast, but a maxi skirt and turtleneck combo will not lead you wrong. A turtleneck is the perfect sort of structured piece to balance out the length and flow of a maxi skirt. The good news is that blustery autumn days don’t stand a chance against a well-lined maxi skirt. (If you don’t have a maxi skirt handy you can do a look like this with any maxi dress you have on hand! Simply tie or tuck your turtleneck to the desired length and you are golden!)

Shop the look:

06 | All black everything.

There is something undeniably chic about an all-black outfit. I mean a little black dress is iconic for a reason, and an outfit like this is too. The key to a monochrome outfit is adding different textures and cuts to add interest. If you have a more fitted turtleneck, go for a looser-fitting jacket or pair of black jeans to pair it with. If you have a chunky knit sweater, go for a pair of skinny jeans (yes, they still have their place) and black sneakers.

In short…

In the end, the turtleneck is a versatile staple you can incorporate for most occasions this fall and winter. Hopefully some of these ideas inspire you to use pieces from your existing wardrobe to pair with it.
